AGRICULTURE COMES TO THE CLASSROOM AT TRUMAN
On Monday, March 21st, students at Truman Elementary
will learn “what’s growin on” with an Ag in the
Classroom activity sponsored by the Iowa Farm
Bureau. There are 25-30 presenters who will be
covering the program goals of teaching about our
food system and the role of agriculture in our
economy and society. Students will travel to
different classrooms and an outdoor tent to visit 10
different stations between 8:30-11 a.m. and noon to
12:30 p.m. “This is an incredible effort on the part
of community volunteers to share real life
information with our students,” explains Chris
Gallin, interim principal at Truman. “The experience
personifies many of the ITI brain compatible
elements that we value for our students,” she adds,
providing hands-on learning opportunities in a way
that integrates curriculum with day-to-day real-life
activities. Although Iowa is considered a “rural”
state by many, most of the students in the Davenport
Community Schools do not have direct experience with
most concepts related to agriculture as either a
lifestyle or an industry. Ag in the Classroom Day
makes these concepts relevant and meaningful to
students.
