READING – The Gift that Keeps on Giving
Davenport Schools READ WITH ME Program

One of the best gifts you can give your child is time together with a book. The “Read With Me” program provides a structured weekly opportunity at 11 different schools for adults and preschool children (birth to 5) to spend time reading together.

This free program is funded through a grant from Scott County Community Empowerment and includes several important features. Each one-hour session provides a developmentally appropriate story and lessons delivered by trained facilitators, hands-on activities for the children, snacks and free children’s books. Adult participants (these can be parents, grandparents, babysitters, etc.) receive ideas to promote literacy at home and a wide variety of other parenting tips throughout the year. Collaborative partners for the program include the Davenport Community Schools, the Davenport Public Library and early ACCESS agencies.

Participants are welcome to attend whatever location and time-frame is most convenient for them. “We’re working to help build a love of reading and create an opportunity for fun,” says Deb Wood, Reading Facilitator for the district. “Helping young children learn to enjoy books now will help with school success later.” The sessions will begin again the week of January 3rd:
