Williams Teacher Receives
Excellence in Science Teaching Award
Joan Moorhead of Williams Intermediate School
has received an Excellence in Science Teaching
Award from the Iowa Academy of Science (IAS).
She will be recognized during the luncheon at
the IAS Spring meeting April 21, 2012 at North
Iowa Area Community College, Mason City, Iowa.
Only a few of these awards are given throughout
the State of Iowa each year. Congratulations,

NHS Teacher Receives
Excellence in Science Teaching
North High School science teacher, Teri
Wiese, has received an Excellence in Science
Teaching Award for earth science from the Iowa
Academy of Science (IAS). Teri previously
received an Excellence in Science Teaching award
for biology. She will be recognized at the IAS
luncheon on April 21 at North Iowa Community
College in Mason City, Iowa. Only a few teachers
are honored with this award each year.

Betty Griffin Selected for
2011 Academic Innovation & Leadership Award
Betty Griffin, a curriculum and instruction
specialist in the Davenport Community Schools,
was one of nine individuals honored by the
Technology Association of Iowa at the 2011
Pioneer Hi-Bred Women of Innovation Awards
presentation on Thursday, November 17, 2011 in
Des Moines, Iowa. Women were nominated from
communities across the State of Iowa and the
finalists in each category included researchers,
teachers, CEOs, Vice-Presidents and others who
have advanced Iowa’s global reputation as a
place where innovation is fostered. Griffin was
awarded the Academic Innovation and Leadership
in Secondary Education. She brought the Project
Lead the Way (PLTW) program to Davenport, and
developed a PLTW summer camp for 8th grade
students. She helped create a scholarship fund
to promote college credit for high school
students. PLTW is a nationally recognized
engineering program offered at Davenport
Central, North and West High Schools. The
program is open to students in grades 9-12 and
is a 5-course sequence taught in conjunction
with college preparatory math and science
courses. PLTW programs prepare students for two
or four year college degrees in engineering and
technology-related careers. |

Vi Cassatt Honored as Older
Worker of the Year
Vi Cassatt, a para-educator at
North High School, was honored Wednesday,
November 2, 2011 at the Generations Area Agency
on Aging 24th Annual Senior Employment Awards
Ceremony. Vi received the "Older Worker of the
Year Award." Vi has worked at North High School
since 1999 |
