German Club

German Club at West High School offers an opportunity for students to get together and learn about German customs and traditions. Meetings are held in room 109, usually after school from 2:45 until 3:10. If an event lasts longer than the normal time frame, students will be notified in advance through posters announcing the event. German Club holds 4 major events each year: Oktoberfest, Weihnachtsfest, Faschingsfest and a Tri-Club picnic. German Club officers and advisory board members meet and plan all activities. Sometimes students choose to bowl, to watch German movies, eat authentic German food or to play games and have fun.

Membership Dues are $2.00 and are collected at registration or during the month of September (see Ms. Auerbach in Room 109).

Davenport Kaiserslautern
Exchange Program

There is a German cultural exchange opportunity for students who have successfully completed at least 2 years of German at West High School. Every other year, students may travel to Kaiserslautern, Germany and stay in a German home and attend a German high school for three weeks. Application for the program, an interview and recommendations are required. Candidates are chosen from West, North and Central Students.

Davenport Rotary Club established this 20 year old program and assists it financially. The German teachers from West, North and Central are usually chaperones.

Burg Gymnasium in Kaiserslautern is the school with whom we exchange students. Our visit takes place in June and then they come to Davenport in October of that same exchange year.

Students who are currently enrolled in German at West and have successfully completed 3 years of German may apply to become an exchange student for either one semester or one year in Kaiserslautern. Please contact the German teacher for details concerning this program.
