Madison Elementary School Library & Destiny Library Catalog

School library
The Madison Library Media Center has approximately 12,000 holdings, including books, periodicals, videos, compact discs, and computer software.

Materials are circulated using Follett’s Destiny Library program.  The Destiny Library program improves access to library and curriculum materials (which has been proven to be one of the factors that raises test scores and student learning), provides students access from any computer at school, home or other locations having an Internet connection, and also makes it easier for students to find materials at their reading level via the Lexile score feature.  Click on the following link to visit our Destiny Library catalog: https://dvpt.follettdestiny.com.

Library Media Center materials are circulated for a two week borrowing period.  With the Kindergarten and first grade students, we do like the materials returned after one week.  If students would like a longer time, renewals are encouraged by returning the item and re-checking it out.  If materials are damaged or lost, students are expected to pay replacement costs.  The Library Media Center is open for use during the school hours.

Students in grades three through five are encouraged to participate in the “Iowa Children’s Choice Award” book program.  Each year there is a master list of books (18-25) from which students must read or hear at least two of the books.  This takes place from September to March.  In early March students vote for their favorite book.  State-wide the votes are tallied, and the winning author receives an award.  This becomes a student-selected, award winning book.

Students in grades Kindergarten through three can participate in a similar book program, “The Iowa Goldfinch Award.”  Each year there is a master list of books (20-25 with a mixture of picture books and short chapter books) from which students must read or hear at least five of the books.  Mrs. Berger tries to make sure that the first and second grade classes hear at least five, and encourages them to read more on their own!  This also takes place from September to March.  In early March students vote for their favorite book.  State-wide the votes are tallied, and the winning author receives an award.  This, too, becomes a student-selected, award winning book.

We have three student-station computers for use in the Library Media Center.  Students can access the Destiny Library program, Internet for research purposes, access student computer programs, create PowerPoint presentations, and word-process their reports.

The Library Media Center has two televisions mounted on the ceiling.  We can connect a vcr player, and cable television so we can do some whole group, large screen learning.  There is a ceiling-mounted projector connected to a computer and speakers to enable whole group/large group sharing of classroom lessons, video, and online resources.  We also have a mobile media cart with a projector, speakers, and computer serving the same purpose.
